Frequently Asked Questions
What is 2048?
2048 is a number puzzle game where you slide tiles on a grid to merge them and create larger numbers. The goal is to reach the target tile (default: 2048) by combining tiles with matching numbers.
How do I play?
Use arrow keys (on desktop) or swipe gestures (on mobile) to move all tiles in that direction. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge. After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears. Keep merging to reach your target!
Can I undo a move?
Yes! You can undo your last move by pressing Backspace or Delete (on desktop) or clicking the "Undo Last Move" button. Note that undo only remembers your last move, so use it quickly if you make a mistake.
What are the different grid sizes?
You can choose from 4x4 (Classic), 5x5, 6x6, or 7x7 grids. Larger grids offer more space, making it easier to reach higher targets, but they also require more strategic planning.
Can I change the target tile?
Yes! You can select different target tiles from 512 to 16384. Higher targets are more challenging but achievable with larger grid sizes and good strategy.
How is the score calculated?
Your score increases whenever you merge two tiles. The points you gain equal the value of the new merged tile. For example, merging two 256 tiles gives you 512 points. Your best score for each grid size is saved locally.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes! The game is fully responsive and works on mobile devices. Simply swipe in any direction to move tiles. Touch controls are optimized for mobile gameplay.
What happens when I win?
When you reach your target tile, you'll see a "You Win!" message. The game continues automatically, allowing you to keep playing and aim for even higher tiles!
What happens when the board is full?
If the board is full and no moves are possible (no empty cells and no adjacent matching tiles), the game ends with a "Game Over!" message. You can restart and try again!
Can I turn off sound effects?
Yes! There's a toggle switch in the configuration panel that allows you to enable or disable sound effects. Your preference is saved in your browser's local storage.
Is this the same as 2048?
2048 is based on the popular 2048 game by Gabriele Cirulli. This version offers additional features like customizable grid sizes, different target tiles, and an undo function. The core gameplay mechanic remains the same.
Are my scores saved?
Yes! Your best score for each grid size is saved locally in your browser. However, if you clear your browser data, these scores will be lost.
What's the best strategy?
There are several effective strategies, but the corner strategy is one of the most popular: keep your highest tile in one corner and primarily use two directions plus one perpendicular direction. Build descending chains along edges and try to control where new tiles spawn. For more detailed tips, check out the "How to Play" page!
